Since 2008, a series of as-yet-unrealized proposals to build a new Colossus at Rhodes Harbour have been announced, although the actual location of the original monument remains in dispute. In 653, an Arab force under Muslim general Muawiyah I conquered Rhodes, and according to the Chronicle of Theophanes the Confessor, the statue was completely destroyed and the remains sold. According to the Suda, the Rhodians were called Colossaeans (Κολοσσαεῖς), because they erected the statue on the island. John Malalas wrote that Hadrian in his reign re-erected the Colossus, but he was mistaken. In accordance with a certain oracle, the Rhodians did not build it again. It collapsed during the earthquake of 226 BC, although parts of it were preserved. Godzilla ripped both its arms off, but many more simply replaced it. The blasts awoke him and Godzilla started fighting Colossus. However, Godzooky tricked the robot into firing at Godzilla. When the Colossus blasted a building with its beams, Godzilla was revealed to be in suspended animation. Knowing they'd need him, they began to search for Godzilla. Looking around, the crew soon found Colossus wandering the streets in search of life to destroy. When Godzilla tried to help, he was blasted with a beam of light and taken, allowing the Calico to be destroyed in the city's interior. Soon the Calico was drawn into the city by a tractor beam, no doubt activated by the robot. The city rose from the depths in modern times and the monster-like robot awoke. However, during the huge earthquake that sank the city, the robot was damaged and turned evil and kept its own makers in suspended animation. Created by Atlanteans, Colossus was put in charge of awakening the people of the city, who went into suspended animation to escape a great earthquake.
